Every year on April 22, people around the world celebrate Earth Day. This holiday originated on April 22, 1970, and was started by Senator Gaylord Nelson. His goal was to bring attention to environmental problems and save the planet.
This idea was up and running after the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill. Over 20 million Americans protested against pollution and advocated for environmental protection.
In the 1990s, Earth Day expanded globally, with over 200 million people in 141 countries focused on raising awareness for environmental issues. Today, all around the world, there are plenty of ways to celebrate and help clean the planet!
Celebrations Around the World:
- Japan: At Yoyogi Park, more than 100,000 visitors experience cherry blossom festivals and participate in workshops.
- Zimbabwe: Different communities host Earth Day parties with food, music, and art.
- Italy: The “Village for the Earth” in Rome’s Villa Borghese park offers a range of events such as games, workshops, science labs, and activities.
