January is National Mentoring Month (NMM), a time to celebrate the impact mentors have on our lives. Mentors guide, inspire, and show support to students every day.
Mentors can be teachers, older siblings, coaches, and club leaders. They help students learn new skills, build confidence, and navigate difficult challenges in life and at school. Small acts of guidance, like showing someone how to study for a test or giving advice about a project, can make a big difference.
“My mom has been a mentor to me,” says Nicole Blau.
“She is always there for me when I’m down and encourages me to follow my dreams no matter how impossible.”
Mentoring doesn’t simply help the person being guided, it also benefits the mentor. Helping someone can make you more confident, patient, and aware of your own strengths.
This NMM, think deeply about the people who have helped you or ways you can support others. Even if it’s just helping a classmate understand a tricky assignment, giving simple advice, or just being a friend, anyone can be a mentor for someone. Small actions make a big impact.
