The Emerson Varsity Cheer Team is preparing for its first competition of the season this Saturday, January 10th, at a regional high school competition, marking the official start of months of hard work, pressure, and excitement. Senior captains and freshman members alike say the team has been focused, motivated, and eager to finally take the mat after weeks of practice, conditioning, and routine clean-ups.

The first competition sets the tone for the rest of the season. With new choreography, new team dynamics, and higher expectations, the routine being performed this weekend reflects how much the team has grown since day one. For us seniors, it’s another milestone in a final season, while for freshmen, it’s a chance to show their commitment and the best they can do. 

This competition is not just about scores, but about execution, confidence, and teamwork. Our coach and athletes agreed that this weekend is about showing judges – and ourselves – how prepared we are.

“This first competition feels different from past seasons. As a senior, I want to make it memorable for the team and set the tone for a strong year ahead,” said Mikaela Tucker.

For Mikaela and the other two captains, this competition carries more weight than in previous years. As one of the team’s senior captains, she not only focuses on her own performance but also guiding younger teammates, keeping morale high, and ensuring that everyone feels confident on the mat. Her leadership sets an example for the team, helping underclassmen adjust to the pressure of performing and emphasizing the importance of teamwork, dedication, and pride in the routine.

“I’m most excited to cheer with the whole team and see all our hard work pay off,” said Rosey Schaefer. “It’s a little scary since it’s my first competition, but I know we’ve practiced so much that we’re ready.”

Even with the nerves of her first competition, Rosey’s excitement about performing with her teammates stands out. Her anticipation highlights the team’s strong sense of unity, showing that even underclassmen feel connected to the larger goals of the squad. By leaning on the support of seniors and practicing consistently, Rosey is learning how preparation and teamwork turn nerves into confidence.

As the team prepares to take the mat for the first time this season surrounded by judges and audience, the focus remains on trust, energy, and pride.

“No matter the outcome, we just want to go out there and perform our best together,” said Mikaela, a goal that captures the spirit of the season ahead.
