As of February 12th at 8:34 pm, Pete Alonso has finalized his deal with the New York Mets.
Alonso has re-signed a deal which will provide him with 54 million dollars over two years. Mets fans all over have been hesitant, and stressed over the situation after he rejected multiple offers given to him, especially after owner – Steve Cohen – made it clear he would not overpay for him. Alonso rejected a seven-year 158 million dollar offer to stay in New York long term. He held out for free agency to see how much he could get. Cohen offered him a three-year 70 million dollar deal which he also turned down. This is what worried Mets fans.
Over the last couple of years, Alonso has been inconsistent, and has not been performing his best, but by rejecting these offers he was taking a bet on himself, that he is worth more than what was on the table. However, to other teams, he was not worth the money, and didn’t really have any other attention. When he realized this, and his love for New York, he accepted the 54 million dollar offer. It includes a 10 million dollar signing bonus, 20 million dollars in 2025, and an opt-out after one year, meaning he does not have to continue with the contract, but if he opts in, he receives 24 million in 2026.
What has really concerned Mets fans is there was no definite replacement for Alonso, and no one good on the market. What would have been done is the Mets would have moved Mark Vientos, their starting third baseman who did amazing in 2024, to first, and find a replacement third baseman. But now that Pete has signed the deal, Vientos does not have to worry about a possible position change, and can remain in the same place that opened eyes in 2024, leaving Mets fans happy and optimistic about 2025.
