You may remember it—or not. I’m talking about Boston Market, known for the classic meatloaf and rotisserie chicken. What about the famous cornbread? Maybe after reading this article, it will ring a bell.
Boston Market opened in Emerson, New Jersey, in 1995 and operated in the community for 28 years before closing in 2023.
Why did it close?:
According to CBS News, “New Jersey officials have ordered Boston Market to shut down 27 of its restaurants across the state. The Department of Labor says it found multiple violations of workers’ rights, including more than $600,000 in back wages.”
Emerson was not the only location that closed permanently. The chain faced numerous financial issues due to multiple lawsuits and allegations of workers’ rights violations.
Today, the previous Boston Market building has been replaced by Wayback Burgers, another food chain.
Personal experiences & Opinions:
I sometimes miss Boston Market. Sure, the food wasn’t the best I’ve ever had, but it felt like something was missing when it closed. When I was younger, I would walk right down the street with my grandma to grab something to eat. On busy nights at home, Boston Market would be there, sitting at the table.
Even though I might be downplaying the food, it had its moments! The meatloaf, mac and cheese, and mashed potatoes with gravy may not have been stellar, but they filled me with a sense of nostalgia.
“Years ago, they were good, but closer to their bankruptcy, the quality of the food was horrible. I’m not a big fan of mac and cheese, but I enjoyed it,” commented Riley Farrell.
Boston Market had a long run as part of Emerson’s “Family Town.” As a new restaurant moves into its place, the memories will linger on.
