The Emerson Recreation Commission is holding a social for the seventh-grade this year on May 29th at Benkovic Field. As seventh graders ourselves, we really appreciate the effort that it has put into making this available to us, but we feel like it’s a little too sudden. (We found out at the beginning of May.)
We are happy to have one, maybe just later in the year. Personally, we would prefer it to be in mid-June, giving us more time to prepare and find something to wear. We have less than a month to prepare for this event, and everyone must be working very hard to put it together in such a short amount of time.
Last year, our sixth-grade dance was announced to us many months before the event took place. This year, it seems like it got rushed. The sixth-grade dance was absolutely fire. We had it at a nice country club in Haworth, where the dance floor was filled with light. Last year’s dance included a DJ and a photo booth. The food was nice as well.
The sixth-grade dance has set some pretty high bars. Hopefully, the seventh-grade social will be just as fun.
“The Shirley Temples were good. It was chill. We went to this nice place. It was fun, and I took pictures with my friends. I overall had a good time,” said Declan Bahng, a seventh grader who attended the dance last year.
Bahng really enjoyed the event and – obviously – the Shirley Temples.
“It (the Shirley Temples) was insane, I drank like seven of them. I didn’t like the little cherry bits in them, though,.” Bahng added on. He emphasized how delish the Shirley Temples were.
“Do you feel like the sixth-grade dance set high expectations for upcoming dances?”
“Yeah, son, definitely,” Bahng replied with confidence.
Many seventh graders feel like last year’s dance was really special, and it has set some high expectations for our upcoming dances, such as the Seventh-Grade Social and the Eighth-Grade Dance.
We asked a few more questions about this year’s upcoming dance, and Olivia Kim had some answers.
“Do you want a school dance?”
“No, I would rather go on school field trips than spend my time at school dances. I think the money can be spent on something better,” Kim replied to the question.
“Do you find this a big event?”
“No, I do not consider this a big event. If we were older, I would, but it’s not as important. Either way, I still get to hang out with my friends,” Kim replied again to the question.
Kim referred to this event as a small get-together compared to bigger dance events in our lives, like junior and senior prom.
Then again, small moments can make big memories.
Ready or not, we are super grateful to have a Seventh-Grade Social, and we want to share our thanks to the Emerson Recreation Commission for giving us this opportunity. To all seventh graders, we hope to see you at Benkovic Field on Friday night (5/29)!
