In January, students and staff at Emerson High School welcomed their new superintendent, Dr. Torrento, to the district. Since her arrival, she has worked to be present and visible in the school community by attending events, visiting classrooms, and conversing with students, teachers, and staff. Her goal is to strengthen relationships and build a strong sense of community in Emerson.
“I want our students to know me as another caring adult who is here to support them throughout their educational careers,” Dr. Torrento said.
As a lifelong Bergen County resident, Dr. Torrento acknowledges Emerson’s School District for its strong sense of community and pride:
“It is clear that families, staff, and residents care deeply about their schools and their students—this kind of support is incredibly powerful.” She shared. “My hope is to build and refine the district’s many strengths while continuing to create exceptional educational opportunities for every student.”
She is set to make Emerson a place where both students and teachers feel supported and achieve success.
Dr. Torrento is not only a superintendent, she has also been a teacher, coach, athletic director, high school assistant principal, elementary principal, and director of curriculum!
When asked about what her favorite role is, she explained, “If I had to choose a favorite, it would be my current role as Superintendent of Schools. This position allows me to bring together all of those past experiences and work collaboratively with students, staff, families, and the community to support the success of our entire district.”
Being involved in athletics has helped shape her leadership. They taught her how to be a “team player” and become an effective educator.
“Athletics brings together students, families, and staff in a shared experience, and it requires the ability to support individuals while also working toward a collective goal; those same principles apply in a school district,” she claimed.
While fulfilling the role of superintendent, it comes with challenges; she must balance her priorities and make decisions that are in the best interest of the students.
“I always return to the same guiding principle: what will best support our students and help them succeed,” she said.
Advice Dr. Torrento wants to share with students:
“Support your classmates, challenge yourselves to grow, and never be afraid to pursue your passions. Our schools are filled with talented students, dedicated educators, and supportive families, and together we will continue to accomplish great things!”
