Benkovic Field is a big part of why Emerson is known as “The Family Town.” It’s not just a baseball field, but a place where families spend time together almost every day and every night during the spring and summer months. Benkovic Field, the home of Emerson Little League Baseball, is a place where parents sit in the stands watching the games, younger kids are playing at the playground, and everyone is there for the same reason: to watch and cheer on their baseball players. This field brings everyone together.
Many parents watching games today once played on this same field when they were kids. Now they are back, cheering on their own children.
Benkovic Field is actually named after Kenneth Benkovic, Jr., a former Cavo, and it was dedicated in his memory. That meaning adds something deeper to the field. It is not just a place for games, it’s a place of remembrance. In a small town like Emerson, that kind of connection really matters.
For the players, it’s more than just a place to play baseball games. It’s a place to learn about the game of baseball, learn teamwork, and make new friends. I played on that field for many years and my father was also my coach.
“I think playing on Benkovic Field was the best feeling as a kid.” said Emerson senior Nick Giella.
“When they announced your name, and you got a hit, you could always hear people cheering for you all the time,” he explained.
When I asked Senior Daniel Galeazza about Benkovic Field he said, “Playing on Benkovic Field felt like home as a kid.”
He added, “Everyone was there, my family, my friends, my teammates.”
“Playing on Benkovic Field as a kid was the best part of my week,” he admitted.
In a town that takes pride in being “The Family Town,” Benkovic Field really shows what that means. It is a place where families show up, support each other and make baseball memories together.
