Netflix has released a new hit original Bridgerton. The show is set in 1813 London, and is filled with scandal, romance, and drama. It would be best to describe it as a Victorian era Gossip Girl.

As a disclaimer, Bridgerton does have a TV-MA rating which is usually given to shows that are suitable for 17 year olds and up. The show includes scenes with nudity, violence, and mature language.

The show, Bridgerton, is based off of Julia Quinn’s eight novel series, which has a 4.4 star rating on Amazon. The plot follows two high society families through the social season, the Bridgertons and the Featherington’s. Both families have to attend balls and promenades to find a suitor who will raise their families aristocratic positions. While the Bridgertons and Featherington’s attend the same events, they both have completely opposite experiences due to Lady Whistledown.

Lady Whistledown is the author of an anonymous newsletter giving scandalous details of the social season. No one knows her true identity, yet she knows everything about them, hence the Gossip Girl comparison. Whistledown’s articles were religiously read by all of the social classes and were found highly credible. If there was scandal, she would uncover it and ruin your social season.

The first season mainly follows the oldest daughter, Daphne Bridgerton, and her struggle during the socials season. It all started with a plot to deceive Whistledown that blossomed into a love story between Daphne and Simon, the Duke of Hastings. Viewers watch Daphne struggle with marriage and her own morals when it comes to her family.

While social Seasons usually lead to higher places in the aristocratic system, it was the opposite for the Featheringtons. During season one, their family becomes plagued with scandal when their cousin Marina Thompson comes to town. On top of that there is a huge money loss and a death, which is one of the final cliffhangers of season one.

Overall, this show is very entertaining but some scenes are not for younger viewers. Chris Van Dusen, the creator of the show, says he would like to release eight more seasons if it is successful. The next seasons should entail stories about the rest of the Bridgerton children.
