Many cultures around the world bring very different superstitions and traditions come New Year’s Eve. Though some may be funny or odd, many people follow them yearly and reverently. Here are some interesting New Year’s practices that just might work to bring you luck next year!
Eat grapes under the table: Some Latin countries believe eating 12 grapes under the table at midnight (one for every chime of the clock) brings luck and grants wishes for the coming year.
Don’t eat lobster: Many cultures believe a lobster dinner on New Year’s Eve to be bad luck, since lobsters walk backwards.
Break glass or dishes: It is popular in Denmark to break dishes on New Year’s to have a clean slate for the next year, as well as to ward off evil spirits. This can also be a sign of friendship if you break a dish on someone’s doorstep or vice versa.
Jump waves: In Brazilian culture, wearing white in the ocean and jumping over seven waves right at midnight represents seven wishes for the new year.
Fill your cabinets and cupboards: Starting a new year off with empty cupboards supposedly brings scarcity for the next 12 months, so make sure to stock up!
Walk with an empty suitcase: This tradition, formed in Latin countries, welcomes opportunities to travel come the new year and is thought to manifest travels.
Open windows and doors: The cold winter air of the new year is said to flush out evil spirits and invite new air – think “out with the old, in with the new!”
Roll a cabbage through the door: Rolling a cabbage head through your front door at midnight supposedly brings good fortune and prosperity.
Whether these truly work or not could be up for debate, but there’s no doubt they’re fun to follow!
