Recently on February 5th, 2021, a documentary has been released on Hulu about the singer Britney Spears. The documentary goes into the depths of her fame and how it has affected her negatively. It also shows the ugly side of fame and how it can cause really bad mental issues.

In the beginning of the documentary, they show Britney Spears’s childhood and how she became famous. The documentary includes footage of young Britney and her first shows that were performed at a mall. Shortly after she became very popular and started to have real concerts and became super famous.

It then moves on to the ugly side of fame that hit Britney. Paparazzi has always been around and in the beginning, Britney explained that it didn’t bother her and she kind of enjoyed it. Once she got married and had a kid paparazzi, would not leave her or her family alone which affected her very negatively. Paparazzi would catch off guard photos of Britney which led the media to believe she was an unfit mother.

After receiving a lot of criticism and hate, Britney started to break down. The media took this great, talented celebrity and ripped her to shreds. It was shown when one day she goes to a hair salon asking to have her head shaved. The hairdresser refuses, so Britney shaved her own head. Shortly after, Britney goes to see her kids but is refused by her ex husband. During this emotional moment paparazzi chose to come at her with cameras in which she responded by attacking the paparazzi car. Even after this, the media still proceed to call her crazy and not see her cry for help.

Towards the end of the documentary, we see Britney fall apart completely. She is constantly being seen at hospitals and had lost her rights to her children. She had been suffering from drug abuse and mental health issues.

Her family then proceeds to place a conservatorship on Britney. A conservatorship is a legal concept in the United States. A guardian or a protector is appointed by a judge to manage the financial affairs and/or daily life of another due to physical or mental limitations, or old age. A person under conservatorship is a “conservatee”, a term that can refer to an adult. So Brittney’s dad has been appointed as her conservator and has rights to her estate, finances, medical decisions, and who she is and is not allowed to see. Conservatorships have only really been used for old people.

In Britney’s case, her conservator did not have her best interest and used the conservatorship to manipulate Britney.

Fans started to see this through Britney’s Instagram posts. Fans would evaluate Britneys post’s and captions and started to believe they meant things. They saw this as her cry for help. Her conservator found out fans started to notice things and immediately placed her in a mental hospital. This is where the hashtag #freebritney became very popular among fans and even celebrities like Paris Hilton.

Britney’s conservatorship has failed her and was not placed for the right reasons. Britney deserves justice and to become her own person, so for her we say FREE BRITNEY.

Honestly, this was a great documentary to watch with friends or family. Especially if you are a big Britney fan. It is so sad to see how fame can ruin a person and become very toxic. It definitely opened my eyes to understand what happened to Britney Spears and why things are the way they are.
