The Tokyo Olympics were set to happen months ago but due to the pandemic, there is no clear plan. Japan has said that there is no “Plan B” for the games, and they are trying to figure out how to safely host them. If the games were to happen ,there would be no fans and the city of Japan would be empty. Japan is dealing with worse Covid-19 numbers than in February, and to others hosting, the games seem impossible.

Japan is in their third wave of the pandemic, and it has not reached its peak yet. Experts think that having hundreds of athletes sent to Japan could be a total disaster, and if athletes get the virus that would be such a waste of hard work. Out of all the testing rates in the country, Japan is the lowest, and this is not what people want to hear. Scientists believe that mass vaccination will not solve the problem, and that it is very unrealistic.

Back in February Japan had a lot of cases, and now there is triple the amount. The third wave has overwhelmed the country, and they are not sure how to deal with it. According to Japan, they  have tested 52 per 1000 of its population, and that is very low compared to other countries. Japan has resisted national lockdown in order to keep the economy open, and this is making their pandemic worse.

If the games were to happen there would be an immense amount of restrictions, and it would be extremely different than the previous years. The way Japan quaretines is a lot less strict than other countries, and this could be a reason why the numbers are so high. Japan has encouraged a vaccine for all athletes but it is not required to play in the Olympic Games. It is very hard to predict what will happen in the future, but it is not looking good for Japan.

The Olympics are one of the most beloved events in the world, and hosting the games is an amazing privilege. It is very sad that the games had to be postponed, but Japan is making an effort to safely have the games. There will have to be strict restrictions and regulations in order for athletes to be safe. Hopefully the games will happen, and all the athletes will be protected.
