When students walk into the art classroom this year, they’ll be greeted by more than just color and creativity; they’ll be welcomed by Ms. Trahan, Emerson’s newest Graphic Design, Digital Photography, 8th-grade Graphics, and Yearbook teacher!
At a very young age, Ms.Trahan decided to pursue art because her mother really pushed her to do it. She went to the University of Rhode Island and got her Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts. But, she didn’t just want an art career, she wanted to become a teacher since she was influenced by her family members who are teachers and her grandmother.
Ms. Trahan commented, “I decided to teach here after my first interview. I actually really enjoyed the school culture, and I was very excited and hoping to get this job.”
So far, she has been doing an excellent job starting off this year by assigning her students individual projects to get to know them better. Her goal is for students to push their limits in the art world and understand how to use design tools.
Ms. Trahan stated, “I hope that students will feel confident in their design work, and I hope they learn how to express themselves freely without judgment. I just want to create a fun but inclusive classroom environment!”
Some artists could face challenges; it’s a skill you learn over time, and lots of mistakes are made along the way.
For example, Ms. Trahan admitted, “One mistake I’ve made in the art world, I would say, is that you can’t always strive for perfection. Don’t always worry about people’s judgment; it’s a reflection of you, and something you’re going through or an event that’s happened in your life. Everyone’s stories are different, and I think that everyone should just create them through art. I was always very worried people would judge my art, but then I realized I didn’t care because it’s my art and it made me happy!”
Emerson High School students are very excited to see what new projects Mrs. Trahan will give them next and in the future!
