A group of juniors has created a book club that will be coming next year. Who might those juniors be? Mikaela Tucker, Kylie Grompone, and Makenna Wohlrab! These juniors created this book club as part of their WE Service Project for Mrs. Moran’s AP Government and Politics class.
While it was a requirement to create a service project, the project still came from a place of passion. In their MIA (Motivation, Intention, Action) statement, the group stated, “We started the book club because we wanted to create a space where students could connect through reading, especially since our school doesn’t have a librarian to promote literature. Self expression is foundational to the American experience…our club will foster a love of books, build community and give us all a chance to explore new ideas together.”
The club will hold monthly meetings where members will be able to discuss the selected book for that month. These books will be from a variety of genres, and will be chosen through a student-run recommendation list.
The group plans to partner with the Emerson Public Library so that students without resources can borrow and participate without worrying about buying new books. Students will also be able to use online resources, such as Libby and Sora, which also contain audio books if students prefer to read this way.
When asked about what hopes the club has for people who join, Kylie Grompone reflected, “We hope people can be more motivated to read outside of the books assigned in class, and also to view the book and characters from new perspectives through conversations with other club members.”
