On Tuesday May 20, 2025, Emerson Junior Senior High School held a ceremony during the Cavo Strong period. At 12:54 p.m., Cavo Strong groups met with their teachers and walked out to the front of the school by Cavos’ Square.
The entire school was welcomed by Principal Hutchinson on a beautiful sunny day. Mr Hutchinson spoke about the significance of Memorial Day, honoring those in the U.S. military who have died for their country.
Sophomore student Josie D’Auria thought the ceremony was a great idea, saying, “The ceremony also connects to what we learn in class because it reinforces the significance of the losses of the veterans who fought for our country. In history classes we have learned about devastating losses due to war and the sacrifices made. This was a nice way to honor and remember them.”
Next, the “Star Spangled Banner” was performed by the Emerson Junior Senior High School Band. Students and staff then took a moment of silence in remembrance of those who fought for the U.S.. Following, the Emerson Junior Senior High School Choir sang, as tribute to local veterans and fallen heroes. The Band and Choir students performed right near the flagpole.
Emerson Sophomore, Savannah Dennehy who is a part of the choir said, “I think it is cool to be able to perform during the memorial day ceremony because it shows the school is appreciative of the holiday.”
Savannah also explained the songs the choir had sung, “We sang ‘Service Medley’ and ‘America The Beautiful’. I think these songs were chosen because they honor and give thanks to those who fought for our country – which we are very grateful for – and these songs truly represent that.”
Each student was given a small American flag which was placed in the ground at the front of the school in tribute. This was the perfect ending to the ceremony, as Emerson High School was full of red, white, and blue, giving those who passed through a visual reflection of remembrance.
