Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States that is celebrated on the last Monday of May each year. It honors and remembers military workers who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The tradition goes back to 1868, when it was originally known as Decoration Day, a time to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers.
Many Americans celebrate the day with parades, ceremonies, and moments of remembrance. Traditionally, flags are hung halfway of the pole from sunrise until noon, then raised to full height. This holiday really brings veterans and soldiers that are still in duty together, honoring those who died for the country.
In Emerson, the entire high school came together and put American flags down in front of the school to show their gratitude. While Memorial Day is a tribute to fallen soldiers, it is also a time to celebrate with family and friends, and an unofficial start to summer. Students from Emerson Junior Senior High School were asked how their Memorial Day weekend went and if they went anywhere to celebrate.
Pavel Diaz said, “ My Memorial Day Weekend was very fun. I went to Seaside Heights with my friends and we stayed at my friend’s parents beach house.”
Ismael Garcia said, “ Memorial Day Weekend was great. I went down the shore with my friends. The boardwalk there was a very fun experience.”
Going to the beach with friends is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day – swimming, eating the good food down there, and – most of all – cruising the boardwalk. All the games and carnival rides they have add to a great experience.
Some people just like to keep it simple. They have a barbeque with family, go out to eat, or even go to a parade near them.
Either way, no matter what you do to celebrate Memorial Day, embrace the spirit of gratitude and being together with your love ones, making memories with friends and family while honoring those who made it all possible.
