The 6th Annual Cavo Cup took place on May 10th, 2025, continuing the tradition that began in 2019, with the boys competing in the spring and the girls in the fall. This event is hosted by Mr. Schama each year; he invites teams that Emerson usually doesn’t play. The game works by every team playing doubles matches, It is a single set played first to six games with no ad scoring. One of the brackets includes coaches playing with their first singles player on each team.
Mr. Schama explained, “Every game counts, so if you lose 6-5, you get 5 points for your team. Still, whichever team has the most points wins!”
Teams compete, and the winners are decided based on who has the most points. They are rewarded with medals and trophies.
Mr. Schama added, “Union City, Indian Hills, Teaneck, Memorial, and Cliffside Park are here today. Union City and Memorial have been coming every single year since the beginning. I invite a mix and match of similar teams that are at the same competitive level, so we have a competitive game of tennis.”
There were a plethora of schools at this event, and all of them were ready to play and compete for the Cavo Cup.
Angela Luzardo returned to the Cavo Cup for her second year. This time, as the Coach of Memorial High School’s Tennis Team, volunteering after last year.
She expressed, “I like playing different schools from other regions of New Jersey that we don’t normally play, and seeing the competition we have on this side. It’s a nice day to hang out and enjoy a good sport!”
Michael DeOrio is already excited for next season to start. He stated, “I am hopeful we will have a league realignment and be able to play with others that are closer to our skill level. But, during the Cavo Cup, I felt like the competition was fair.”
The Emerson Tennis Team cannot wait to keep the Cavo Cup tradition going!
