Celebrated on May 11, 2025, Mother’s Day is a holiday honoring the dedication, love, and strength of mothers and all maternal figures. It provides an opportunity to express gratitude for the sacrifices mothers in our lives have made and the support they offer that may go overlooked on other days of the year.
This holiday recognizes not only biological mothers, but also grandmothers, stepmothers, adoptive mothers, and all those motherly figures who offer care and guidance in our lives.
Families have the freedom to celebrate with their own unique traditions. Some go out to brunch, while others prefer to stay in and spend time with family. Whether through presents or words, the act of thankfulness is greatly appreciated by all.

Senior at Emerson Junior Senior High School, Briona Grier, shared her family’s Mother’s Day traditions, “On Mother’s Day I have a huge barbecue in my grandma’s backyard, and have all of my family over.”
Mother’s Day can also strengthen familial bonds. Loved ones spend time with one another and take the time to appreciate the vital role that mothers have as caregivers. These efforts can often go unnoticed, and it is important to express to the mothers in our lives that we value everything that they do for us.
Senior Amelia Teigen discussed what Mother’s Day means to her, “Mother’s Day helps me appreciate my mother on days when I usually can’t.” Although we may have gratitude for those who care for us, we often don’t have enough time to express it.
This shows the lasting impact that showing your appreciation can have.
Mother and Italian teacher at Holdrum Middle School, Mrs. Ortelio described her experience, “As a mother, Mother’s Day is important to me because it makes me feel appreciated and that my hard work throughout the year is recognized.”
As we celebrate this meaningful day, it’s important to remember that a mother’s impact lasts beyond a single Sunday in May. Mother’s Day reminds us to cherish the people who care for us every day and reflect on the love and support they provide.
