At the age of 88, the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church passed away in Vatican city alongside his loved ones and supporters. His death followed a five-week struggle with respiratory complications, which ultimately led to a fatal stroke.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio was born to Italian immigrants in Buenos Aires, Argentina on December 17, 1936. He later took on the title of Pope Francis, choosing the name Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Poverty.
Attended by thousands of mourners, including heads of state and religious leaders, Pope Francis was laid to rest on April 26, 2025, at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, as he wished. The College of Cardinals is set to convene on May 7, 2025, to elect his successor.
Pope Francis had a lengthy term, serving for over 12 years. During these 12 years, Pope Francis advocated for care for the poor, addressed climate change, and spoke out in support of countless other human rights. He preached of peace and acceptance, and was the first pope to address a joint meeting of Congress in the United States. He was also recognized for his efforts to modernize the church and incorporate inclusivity, all while maintaining a humble and simple lifestyle.
