Not a lot of students went to the April 28th Board of Education meeting, and I’m sure that nobody wants to watch a video that’s over an hour long. So, this article here is to go over what was said regarding the Italian course.
Unfortunately, it has been confirmed that Italian will be sun-setting next year, but students moving on to Italian two and three are able to take it next year so that they don’t have to switch their language course.
I would like to slip in a quick disclaimer: The Board members have already clarified that this is out of their hands.
The sunset of the Italian course was discussed briefly a couple times, and some speeches were given by parents and students. Emerson resident and parent Mrs. Downing said, “I just wish that we were given a warning when the Board was uncertain about its success.”
Everyone knows that Italian was offered to the Junior High this year, and they’ve been left with another question: Why would they offer it to younger grades if they knew the course was on its way out?
A lot of students think that it was wrong to do, but they actually offered it to Junior High to save the course. Due to the low application numbers in the Senior High, they offered the course to younger grades as a way to get those numbers up. Unfortunately, that strategy didn’t work, and now it’s being taken away.
Even with everything going on, there’s still some good news. The school is adding a STEM CP (college prep.) program in hopes of getting younger students to be exposed to more technology.
The only thing that I can say with confidence is: We’re all going to miss Italian.
