With the opening 2025 MLB season, a new wave of baseball bats has taken over the media and caught people’s attention.
Torpedo bats are a bowling pin shaped bat that became the talk of the sport after the New York Yankees hit eight home runs in one game against former Yankee pitcher Nestor Cortez.
Normal baseball bats have a “sweet spot” which is about 5-7 inches from the end of the bat, and is typically where the thickest part of the bat is. However, New York Yankee analysts, and other analysts across the sport went through with studies that showed their players were not hitting the ball on the sweet spot, yet a little below. So what these teams did was move the sweet spot down. With the torpedo bats the sweet spot lays about 11 inches away from the end of the bat.
In addition, torpedo bats increase swing speed. At the same weight it might not make sense how, but with regular bats the weight is more towards to end, where as the torpedo bats shift the weight closer to the hands, distributing it better for efficient bat speed.
The reason these bats have had so much talk is the controversy. Many players, teams, and fans have questioned if the bats are even legal. However, it is confirmed that the MLB has approved these bats for play as they meet the weight and material standardizations that the League has set.
Without a doubt, a new wave of baseball is forming, with many brands such as Louisville Slugger, Easton, and more already releasing torpedo bats for sale to the public.
Fans are eager to see how these bats will play out – if they will stick around, or slowly fade out.
