Valentine’s Day is a special occasion that celebrates love, friendships, and appreciation. It offers a chance for people to express their feelings to loved ones, whether through thoughtful gifts, kind words, or quality time together. The holiday inspires people to show gratitude for the important relationships in their lives. Valentine’s Day also spreads positivity and joy, with small gestures from loved ones like cards, flowers, or chocolates, making the day brighter than it already is. Beyond romantic love, it promotes connection, reminding everyone that the value in love has all types of forms.
Here at EJSHS, a tradition of ours is for the Student Council to organize carnations bought/given to students or staff members.
Kayla Elek, head of Student Council said: “We had a table set up in the main hallway for carnations to be sold by club members. Next we collected all of the carnations bought by students, sorted them by what room they would be in during Period 4, and went through each wing of the building to deliver! It’s one of our favorite traditions: Every year students and staff get to open nice messages from their peers. We sold over 200 carnations and nothing unexpected happened, but we did introduce some new factors into our delivery, such as music. We were so happy to see students sending carnations to their favorite teachers, especially teachers new to EJSHS this year. It was very nice coming around to teachers and delivering a nice message.”
Valentine’s Day traditions, like the carnation sale at EJSHS, show how the holiday promotes so much love. The Students Council organizes the event, allowing students to send flowers and messages to peers and teachers in the building. This tradition here at our school emphasizes how Valentine’s Day goes beyond romantic love, and fosters a positive and supportive community where everyone feels valued!
An additional teacher, Mrs. Norato, a Social Studies teacher, shared what she did for Valentine’s Day with her family. Norato explained, “As a family we went to a concert at Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, New Jersey, The band was called The Get Up Kids. This was Fiona’s first indoor concert and it was very exclusive, so she got to be in the front row to see the show. My husband bought me and Fiona a dozen red roses and had a nice night with my family. We went to dinner at a local restaurant near the concert and had a wonderful time with our family on this special day.”
Mrs. Norato’s Valentine’s Day was not just about romance, but also about spending meaningful time with family. Attending a concert together made the holiday special, especially for her daughter, Fiona, who got to experience her first indoor concert and exclusive setting. Thoughtful gestures of giving roses and enjoying a family dinner added to the memorable night. Her experience shows that Valentine’s Day can be a time to celebrate love in different ways, even if it’s not for other people. That’s what makes showing love so beautiful, there’s so many types of ways of showing it.
Valentine’s Day is a chance to celebrate love in all of its forms, reminding us that the most meaningful gifts are affection, relationships, and time spent with those who matter most. The day serves as a reminder that love is best expressed through actions, not just words.
