Held on Monday February 17, 2025, Presidents’ Day has been celebrated for over a century.
Recognized on the third Monday of February annually, Presidents’ Day holds an immense amount of history behind it. Originally an unofficial occasion established to commemorate George Washington’s birthday, February 22, the holiday has evolved to honor all U.S. Presidents’ birthdays and achievements.
Congress declared Presidents’ Day as a federal holiday on January 31, 1879, although this did not become a paid holiday for all federal employees until 1885. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 was enacted by Congress in 1971 to officially change the date of celebration to the third Monday in February in order for Americans to enjoy the long weekend. Presidents’ Day is a day to reflect on the nation’s accomplishments and development, as well as its modern leaders.
Even with its historical significance, this holiday isn’t recognized by all 50 states. Iowa, Kansas, and Florida do not celebrate Presidents’ Day as an official holiday. In the other 47 states, public schools, banks, mail, and federal workers receive a day off for the holiday. Many take this opportunity to go on vacation or spend time with family and friends. Additionally, numerous stores offer sales and discounts during this time.
Briella Donahue shared her plans for this Presidents’ Day weekend, “I am going to spend time with family and friends and do something fun with them.”
Francesca Deorio and Demetra Koutsothanasis have similar plans for their day off, “We have a sweet 16 and are going to hang out with friends over the weekend.”
Although Presidents’ Day was never recognized as a national holiday, it serves as both a celebration of American leadership and gives people the chance to enjoy a well-deserved break.
