There is no doubt that February is a cold, dull month in the year. Luckily, it is also the month of the exciting annual awards ceremony that honors musicians in the music industry and their hard work: The Grammys! This exhilarating celebration has been held annually since May 4, 1959, making this award show 67 years old.
The most recent Grammys was on February 2, 2025, and was hosted by Trevor Noah for the fifth year in a row. In between awards, Noah spent his time humoring the crowd with jokes revolving around the political climate and LA fires. Certain jokes about Donald Trump and Beyoncé did not pan out very well or received mixed reactions.
Beyoncé was nominated for multiple different awards in different categories this year. She ended up winning three awards, leaving her with a total of 35 Grammy Awards. She received the Award for Best Country Album, referring to Cowboy Carter, which made her the first black woman to win this award. She also won Album of The Year and Best Country Solo Performance.
High school math teacher, Ms. Melanie Bretnall tells us her opinion on this year’s Grammys, “I don’t think that Beyonce should have won Album of the Year because I don’t think Cowboy Carter is a real country album.” On a more positive note, Brentnall says, “My favorite performance of the night was Chappell Roan performing ‘Pink Pony Club!'”.
Kendrick Lamar asserted dominance in his feud with Drake after he won five Grammys for one of his diss tracks against him, “Not Like Us”. This single earned him awards for Record and Song of The Year as well as Best Rap Performance, Best Rap Song, and Best Music Video.
Chappell Roan was named Best New Artist after receiving her first Grammy, and fellow newer artist Doechii also won her first Grammy this year. Her newest album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, is under the category of Best Rap Album.
Honorable mentions and important moments belonged to Lady Gaga and Shakira. Lady Gaga performed at The Grammys and decided to use her time on stage to advocate for transgender rights. Shakira delivered an acceptance speech while using her platform to address certain political issues. She stated, “To my brothers and sisters who are immigrants, you are loved, you are worth it, and I will always fight for you.” Viewers saw her message as an empowering statement that shows her support for immigrants while also being a critique of U.S. immigration policies.
Turning over to the controversy revolving around this year’s Grammys, viewers were shocked that Taylor Swift and Billie Eilish walked away with zero awards – despite Taylor’s six nominations and Billie’s seven nominations. On top of that, Kanye West’s wife, Bianca Censori, shocked viewers with her extremely revealing attire that she wore on the red carpet.
It’s safe to say that many musicians and artists were honored and earned their deserved recognition this year, while some did not receive any awards despite their excellent creations. As always, this year’s Grammys left viewers entertained, satisfied, or even angry at the outcome. However, it is always an enjoyable experience watching The Grammys!
