Wildfires are currently blazing across LA destroying everything in their paths. While firefighters struggle to put out each of the fires, they are still going strong with new small fires rearing their heads and turning the entire thing into a flaming version of whack-a-mole. The first fire started on January 7th (not a great way to start the year if you ask me). A fire designated the Palisades Fire is one of the largest at the moment, however, only the Eaton Fire has actually claimed any lives.
Here’s what to know about each of the main four fires. The Palisades Fire is the biggest and more than 800 firefighters were assigned to fight it. Next there’s the Eaton Fire, which is responsible for about 10 school districts closing and has taken two lives making it the only one of the four fires to take a life. Moving on, the Hurst Fire has been contained north of the I-210 Foothill Freeway. Lastly, the most famous of the fires is the Sunset Fire.
Named after the Sunset Boulevard where it started, the Sunset Fire was the last of the fires to start. Despite starting last, the Sunset Fire has damaged the area you and I who live in New Jersey may actually have heard of – Hollywood. Though the Sunset Fire is the smallest of the fires, the Sunset Fire has still caused Hollywood to be evacuated and threatened iconic spots like: the aforementioned Sunset Boulevard, The Hollywood Walk of Fame, and the TCL Chinese Theater.
This is all ongoing, and the true damage report and death toll are still coming. Strong winds and a dwindling water supply have contributed to the devastation brought on by the fires. CBS News reports, “Fires across the L.A. area have killed at least 28 people, destroyed more than 15,000 structures and charred some 63 square miles. The Palisades and Eaton wildfires continue to burn today.” In fact, thousands of people are still under evacuation orders, and fire zone curfews are still in effect.
