Third Year and Counting – The Girls’ Team Wins Again

Diana Tamayo, Writer

Down by one point, we sat there and watched as our team performed at the 4x4oom relay one last time. At the end of the finish line our final point was waiting there for us. We huddled together in the middle of the field watching the clock zoom by waiting for the announcer to make the final call.

The speaker went on and announced what we were all waiting for. Winning by half a point, we girls had kept our winning streak for Leagues. Many skilled competitors were running at this meet, but this did not stop our girls’ winning team. This is due to the hard work and dedication  given by each and everyone.

Throughout the season, many of us accomplish a lot of our goals, which has helped us greatly during meets. Some of us are seniors, who got to win Leagues one last time at the home track.

Mia Bonner stood out a lot in this meet because she helped us win by half a point. Every inch counts when jumping and, because of this, we had a close win. Olyvia Burrell won the high jump, long jump, and was second in the shot, and third in the open 200m.

Coach Ledge said, ¨The last two years we won by a lot, but this one was the most satisfying because it took every single point and every single girl on the team to get the win. They left me speechless. ¨

After many of our fantastic seniors had departed (the school, not this earth) last year, some didn’t expect us to be able to pull another win. But we beat the odds and, together, scored point after point – just enough to retain our winning streak and title.

This team has a lot of great potential, and outstanding individuals, which will help us to continue on to compete in bigger meets as the season goes on.
