If you happened to see excited students speeding towards room 102 today, you should know that they were gathering for a cultural exchange – and some really good Indian food at the Holi Festival sponsored by the EHS Unity Club.

Club advisor Sara Schlamowitz and famed science teacher Deochand Deodharrie organized a great celebration including a presentation, some remarks by Mrs. Rehak, a buffet of delicious Indian food, and brightly-colored decorations.

Traditional Indian music was playing in the background, but the melody was drowned out by the sounds of people talking, laughing, and chowing down on naan, chickpea saag, and vegetarian korma.  Some teachers and students were dressed in colorful saris, and Mrs. Rehak wore a jeweled sari along with bright gold bangles and a stunning statement necklace.

More students entered the room with each minute, and they clustered around the buffet with a mix of curiosity and hunger.  Ms. Wisner was preparing cups of mango lassi as student and faculty member alike asked what was in those neat rows of cups she’d just set up for everyone.

“Is that cheese?” asked one girl incredulously.

“No, no.  It’s a mango drink.  Try it.”

“It’s cold!”

Speaking of cold…

The party was taken outside for the “smearing’throwing/sprinkling” of the colored powders.  Our students did not disappoint, and the result of their efforts was a gorgeous mess.

Do you want to learn more about Holi?  Maybe try a cold cup of mango lassi?  Take Yo Gabba Gabba’s advice: “Try it!  You’ll like it!”
