How is the 2023 Baseball Season Looking?

With spring sports coming to a rapid start, our boys’ baseball team is very excited for their season. Coach Sommerhalter and the varsity players are eager to get going. We interviewed the coach himself, Chris Sommerhalter, as well as player Robbie Amoia.

When we asked Coach Sommerhalter how the season was looking so far, he answered, “We have played a few scrimmages and the team looks good. We still have a few things to work on, but the boys are excited and motivated to compete for a championship this year.”

The team plans to have a very successful season. There are high expectations this year for the team with all of the returning starters, pitching staff, and varsity winners from the previous season.

Last season the team was 16-9 and co-league champions with rival Waldwick.  Coach Sommerhalter exclaimed, “We have the talent, experience, leadership, and determination to top last year’s season.”

While there will be much success for the team, there may also be some humbling times. As Coach Sommerhalter admitted, “Baseball is a tough, humbling game. Every player will face failure at some point, and they will have to stay positive and focused.  This is always a struggle, but our players are mentally tough and I believe they will overcome any struggles they face.”

When student Robbie Amoia was asked how the season is looking this year, he replied, “Unfortunately our scrimmages have not been going great but with a little more work we can easily turn it around.” He also talked about what he was most excited for for this season, “I’m just excited about getting back on the diamond and being with the team”

Understandably, both Sommerhalter and Amoia are psyched for this season, especially because there is an impressive milestone on the horizon.

“I am excited to defend our league championship, compete for a State title and for our program to win its 1000th game.  We are eight wins away,” declared Sommerhalter.

This is extremely exciting for the team, and a huge deal for the program. Robbie Amoia is very happy to be back with the team, and to be back on the diamond.

Day to day practices vary throughout the season. Amoia explained, “It depends some days we do just hitting some just fielding and sometimes a mix of both.”

It is very important that players come mentally prepared to practice to learn all the important plays. “Every day we work on our fundamentals of hitting, pitching, fielding and base running.  We put a lot of focus on making routine plays and putting the ball in play,” shared Coach Sommerhalter.

The baseball team is looking very good this year, and the players are very eager to officially start their season. They have many goals for this season and wish to achieve them, one being winning the championship and getting their 1000th win for the program. We have full belief they can achieve their goals, and wish them good luck for their season!
