M3GAN: Horror, Comedy, or Horror Comedy?

Kate Sroka

M3gan, a horror, thriller, and comedy movie about an AI doll that turns into a killer, aired in theaters on January 6, 2023, and received rave reviews.

M3gan centers around tech-savvy Gemma, who is an inventor for a big-name toy company, and her niece Cady who at the beginning of the movie loses her parents in a car accident. Gemma takes in Cady as her legal guardian and the two struggle with finding a balance in their routines and Cady having to live with Gemma.

It was evident that Gemma was not ready to be taking care of a child in terms of how her house was set up. Gemma had begun to work on an AI doll at the beginning of the movie that would be like a friend to children.

When the trailer for the movie was originally released, the makers of the movie categorized it and marketed it as a horror, thriller. The biggest concept was the doll M3gan herself and how her being an AI would set her apart from other killer dolls.

Killer dolls have been a common theme among horror movies for years now, two of the most popular including Chucky and Annabelle. Chucky turned into 8 movies as well as a TV show, and Annabelle has gotten 3 movies.

Following the air date of the movie, trailers for those who had not seen it referred to it as a horror-comedy movie, illustrating the positive reviews on the screen to convince others to go and watch it.

When Gemma sees the struggling relationship between her and Cady, she brings in M3gan to help her out, only for things to go haywire. M3gan goes on a killing spree and takes over the system that Gemma programmed for her.

The movie ends with M3gan killing four people and one dog, and Gemma and Cady teaming up to take her down.

The overall horror content in the movie is minor in comparison to other horror movies. The only parts included were the weapon that M3gan used and how malicious she was to her victims.

The trailers pointed to a more violent movie overall and that the horror elements would take up most of the movie. The actual product of the movie was disappointing in terms of what was promised. M3gan singing Titanium to Cady in the demonstration to the company, having M3gan run like a dog when chasing her victim, and her breaking out into a dance sequence before going on to kill 2 people, don’t give the necessary horror element. All three events left theaters laughing to themselves and brought comedy to the movie but were not necessarily scary to viewers.

The inclusion of comedy was a nice change of pace from the otherwise rather serious nature of the movie as a whole. It was unexpected and at times did not feel like it fit in with the flow.

The plot was continuous throughout however, there were some points that felt like it was a break in the storyline that was not fully carried out. In a movie, it is difficult to do so, but it is essential for it all to make sense.

M3gan was a hit in the movie theaters and box office, and although the comedy element might be odd for some, the movie brings a new twist to the killer doll storyline.
