Most Anticipated Broadway Shows Coming in 2022
June 9, 2021
After a very long pause from Broadway, actors and audiences patiently waited for the reopening of Broadway and the new inspirational shows that will premiere in 2022.
Recently, the Broadway World website has announced the reopening of Broadway Shows starting in September. This is very exciting news for both performers and audiences because Broadway has not been up and running since March due to the Covid shutdown.
CNBC states, “The coronavirus has crippled the live theater industry, especially in its central hub in New York City. Popular shows like “Hamilton,” “The Lion King” and “Moulin Rouge,” which sold millions of dollars in tickets each week, aren’t generating any revenue and won’t for at least four more months.”
Broadway has announced the openings of multiple shows including Wicked and Hamilton, which are both coming back on September 14 this year. However, during the shutdown, more inspiration was brewing and a plethora of new plays and musicals are stepping onto the broadway stages for the first time.
There are two biography-style musicals that have been on many Broadway fans’ minds. MJ, the musical, follows the story of Michael Jackson and his musical journey along with the other aspects in his life. The musical, Diana, is about one of the most beloved females in modern times. This musical follows the life of Princess Diana.
The official Diana the Musical site states, “This is the story of the most famous woman of the modern age as she struggles to endure a spotlight brighter than any the world had ever known. Leading fiercely with her heart, Princess Diana stood up for her family, her country and herself. She defied expectations, she rocked the royals and she created a legacy that will endure forever.”
There are two movie classics coming to the Broadway stage as well. It was announced that starting on October 21st, Mrs. Doubtfire will be taking over the Sondheim Theater. The show was only open for a few months before it needed to be shut down. The show is based on the 1993 movie. It captures the story of a man who is struggling with divorce and lost custody of kids, but gets the idea to disguise himself and pretend to be the nanny.
Also, it was announced that the Night at the Museum Musical is coming into the works. The show is being composed by Alan Menken, who wrote the music for the movie as well. When asked he stated, “What are you working on right now?” Menken responded, “I’m working on a new Broadway show, Night at the Museum, which is almost ready for a reading now.”
The show will be based on the Night of the Museum Trilogy starring Ben Stiller. It will capture the fun story of a night guard at the Museum of Natural History, who discovers that the artifacts move at night.
Broadway plays such as How I Learned to Drive are finally premiering on Broadway in the spring of 2022. This show has had long awaited a Broadway debut; it has been it has numerous endowments such as the Pulitzer Prize. The play is about a woman coming to terms with an abusive relationship with her uncle. It works in flashbacks through the woman’s past life.
It is not just the shows that many are looking forward to seeing but the casts as well. The revival of The Music Man is officially coming out in May of 2022. If that is not exciting enough, Hugh Jackman, the multiple award winning, and wolverine, will be starring as the lead.
Broadway is one of the staples of New York City, and it was devastating to see it closed. However, it is exciting to see that the inspiration and spirit of Broadway never left as more shows, old and new, return.
