How is the NCAA Treating Women Basketball Athletes Versus the Men
March 31, 2021
Earlier this month, reports of the elite female athletes of the NCAA being treated unfairly and comparisons to the boys NCAA athletes came out. In these reports, readers see pictures comparing food, workout equipment, welcome bags, and much more. Most of these things are basic necessities and the NCAA is under fire because of how unequal and unfair this situation is for the female athletes.
The athletes are placed in a bubble where they quarantine as they play. In this bubble they are supposed to be equipped with everything they need, including workout equipment. The female athletes were given yoga mats and dumbbells that did not go over thirty pounds. Compared to the boys division one player who was provided with every workout tool you would need and multiple of them as shown in the picture provided.
USA Today says, “Sometimes, the NCAA and its enablers in the sports media pretend women’s postseason basketball doesn’t exist. Just the other night, when the Rutgers men’s basketball team upset Clemson, CBS declared that it was the first Rutgers win in the tournament since 1983.That was wrong. Rutgers has won dozens of tournament games since 1983, 36 of them in fact, including a runner-up finish in 2007. That would be the Rutgers women. CBS couldn’t have cared less, and many distinguished news organizations and members of the sports media followed right along on Twitter.”
Sexism in sports is an ongoing issue and in a year where many people have been trying to help progress our country and the recurring sexism issue this will become a huge controversy and hopefully the NCAA will work to correct their mistakes.
Furthermore, even in a comparison of basic necessities like food we see how the men have a full buffett with several different options and choices compared to the females who have two boxes with the main meal and two sides. A reporter at ESPN posted the picture and commented, “Soooo not enough space for food options either, @ncaa @ncaawbb?”
Last but not least, players from the mens, and womens, NCAA teams also posted their “swag bags” provided by the NCAA. In the picture , we see how the men have a new pair of shoes, a pillow, a blanket, a bag, several shirts, several body washes, shampoos, and so on. The women’s picture has one shirt, two water bottles, travel size shampoo bottles and body washes, a drawstring bag, and a sweat towel.
Many celebrities and professional athletes commented on this issue. Kyrie Irving said, “So NCAA this is how yall doing our queens? We can’t tolerate this! They deserve more!” This was just one of many tweets at the NCAA for their wrong doing and blatant sexism.
Down to everything that has been done during this tournament for both the mens and womens teams there are differences and it even goes down to the court and area and the amount of fans they are going to have.
The NCAA is going to continue to get away with things like this and continue to go against things that could so easily be fixed and help make a change in our country and womens sports.
