Music is loved by many, especially by teens and young adults. It is always exciting to look back on the songs that were most played and liked by everyone that year.

The top four most listened to songs of 2020, according to Official Charts, are as followed: Blinding Lights by The Weekend, Dance Monkey by Tones & I, Before You Go by Lewis Capaldi, and Head and Heart by Joel Corry ft. MNEK.

The first son, Blinding Lights, was released by The Weekend in 2019, and has so far been nominated for eight awards. The music genre it falls under is Synthwave and R&B/Soul. In 2020, the song became most popular when it became the song for a dance challenge on Tiktok. 

Blinding Lights is about “a love that got away” and it is clear that The Weekend was referring to his relationship with Bella Hadid, according to The Oprah Magazine. 

The next song, Dance Monkey, was also released in 2019, by Tones and & I and has been nominated for three awards so far. The music genre it falls under is Alternative/Indie. This song became popular on TikTok too because it was used for a dance challenge and as well as background music to videos posted to the site. 

The story behind Dance Monkey as Tones explains to ISingmag is, “One person ran past and stole my money. Someone else bent over and tried to play my keyboard. The whole crowd was drunk and rowdy. I said ‘Sorry this is it now.’ They started booing me. I was so frustrated. It showed me how people didn’t have any patience anymore. Replace the word ‘dance’ with ‘sing’, and that sums it up.”

The third song, Before you Go, was released in 2019 by Lewis Capaldi and has so far been nominated for one award. The genre of music this song falls under is also Alternative/Indie.  Unlike the last two songs, this one was not used for a TikTok trend. Listeners just really loved this song and the meaning behind it. This song has a deeper meaning as Lewis explains and he wrote the song based on something that happened in his own family.

Lewis revealed, “It’s about suicide…not necessarily the act of it, but, like, after it happens, the aftermath of it. And…people kind of blaming themselves or starting to think, you know, ‘What could I have done to kinda help that person?’ or whatever.”

Finally, the last most popular song, Head and Heart, was released in July of 2020 by Joel Corry ft. MNEK. Since this song is so new, it has not yet been nominated for any awards. The music genre it falls under is pop. Cory told Euphoriazine that he loved the song’s concept of the classic wrestle between head and heart. 

“Everyone can relate to moments in life when you have to decide which path to take. This year has been tough for everyone, and I wanted to bring some positive vibes and give 2020 a proper summer banger,” said Corry. 

There were so many other amazing songs that people loved to listen to this past year, and there will soon be new ones coming out that people will love. Music brings so much happiness to so many people and it is one of the things everyone mutually enjoys.
