Graffiti is writing or drawings made on a wall or other surface, usually without permission and within public view. Graffiti ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings. So is it art or not?

The answer is yes. If you look at the definition of art, Google says, “The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.”

Graffiti is a way for artists to express themselves. Because of the lack or control, it is able to convey raw and uncensored messages to others. There is a complete freedom of expression in this form of art due to its uniqueness.

In continuation, because graffiti has so much freedom it is often used to make political statements. During the BLM movement, there was a surge in street art depicting many meanings about the topic. It brought thousands of people from all over the country together and raised awareness for their cause.

Not one piece of street art looks the same and there is an incredible amount of diversity in the forms of street art. There is graffiti, which is writing on walls, poster art usually in advertisement to something, spray paint murals that are mostly used to convey a message, and so many more forms of street art. Many of these works of art actually help benefit the community it serves.

One particular piece of Broadway called ‘Demilitarize The Police’ has been gaining attention. The mural depicts officers in riot gear with a blue-green haze symbolizing tear gas. The mural was used to peacefully protest police brutality.

In continuation, city-like areas utilize street art to help brighten up the surroundings and hide eyesores. Many of the buildings are concrete or brick and some are run down. Graffiti and murals add some character to these communities.

Graffiti King says, “Art reminds people to feel alive. It wakes people up. It inspires. Motivates. And sometimes it can make people think”.

In addition to making bold statements, some artists leave their work open to interpretation. This could mean that the piece has multiple meanings or an obscure meaning. This is how artists add mystery and really challenge you to think.

In conclusion, street art is art. It is used to empower people and convey so many messages and meanings, how could it not be considered art?
