A Change in Sports Games
December 10, 2020
Going to stadiums to watch your favorite sports team play is a huge part of some people’s lives, but now fans have to stay at home and miss out on the exciting experience because of Covid-19.
“Going to the stadium and tailgating, eating your favorite foods with the people you see only at those games are the things I look forward to every year. Sadly, that couldn’t happen this year and it hurts to know how much this world is missing out on the things that bring us so much joy,” Tiffany Leuck, an Emerson sports fan, said.
Many stadiums are allowing fans to submit pictures of themselves to be used as cardboard cutouts, so it looks like there are fans in the crowd. But it is not the same because the fans are not really there to actually enjoy it.
“I love being in the stadium and hearing the crowd cheer and being so close to the players. It’s so much better than sitting at home and watching from the TV,” Ashlyn Sterinsky, another Emerson sports fan, said.
The Golden State Warriors, on the other hand, have a different idea on how to get their fans to safely enjoy their games.
The Warriors are going to be spending around thirty million dollars to test every fan before allowing them to enter the stadium, with rapid testing. This will allow up the 50% of fans to be in the stadium during their games, ESPN wrote in a recent article.
“I not only want to get this done and show the world how we can do it now, I’m willing to spend the money to do it,” Lacob, who holds a master’s degree in public health from UCLA, said regarding the Warriors plan.
It is not only important for the fans to be there to hype up their favorite team and the players, but the players themselves love to have the support from their fans.
“It was eerie. You definitely had to bring your own energy, which was different. Our fans fuel us. People get us going,” Jared Cook, Saints tight end, said in an interview.
It is very sad and disappointing that sports fans and players cannot enjoy the games like they used to. But teams are slowly starting to come up with safer ways for their fans not to miss out on the action of being at the games, and maybe one day soon all stadiums will open up again.
