This past April the Emerson Autism Awareness Club hosted a walk around the school track from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. This event took place during both activity periods so all students could attend. Participants were asked to wear blue shirts to show their support for autism. During this walk, club advisor Mrs. Polizzi handed out custom autism awareness shirts to any participants who had completed the walk.

The walk was very successful in spreading awareness for autism since it allowed individuals outside of the club to participate and learn more about how autism affects individuals.

“The event was a great way to spread awareness around our school community as there were many people that attended even those who are not a part of our club,”  says, Junior and Vice president of the Autism Awareness Club, Daniela Rinkiewicz.

In addition to the walk, club members had also created a poster that was displayed outside for all participants to sign as a way to document their support and solidarity. This poster can be seen in the main hallway of the school near the auditorium.

Due to a large number of students and facilities who showed up for the event, the walk is likely to take place again during the Spring of 2023. The walk was a delightful way for members of the EHS community to come together to learn about autism which is characterized by many different social and behavioral challenges.

Co-club advisor, Mrs. Ellen Murphy stated that the club is looking forward to participating in the Autism Speaks Walk in the Fall, which is the world’s largest fundraising event dedicated to supporting those with autism and their families. This event will take place on September 24, 2022, at the Meadowlands Racetrack located in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
