Study Hall is a class unlike all other classes. In Emerson Jr/Sr High School, students use study hall very productively. From taking a virtual high school course to getting other class work done, many students find study hall a necessity in their academic lives.

The life of a high school student can be very stressful. Between all the extracurricular activities (sports, etc.), adding homework to the mix can be frustrating. This is where study hall can be immensely useful to a student. It is an hour each day where one can simply get a head start on any work that needs to be done. That’s it.

Let’s say the average student receives an hour and forty-five minutes of homework per day. On a day they have study hall, they can shave a whole hour off that time, reducing their workload by nearly 60%. This is crucial to a stressful student’s life.

I think [study hall] does [relieve stress] because when I’m up late at night I think ‘Oh, I have study hall the next day, I can just finish my assignment there.”

— Steven Belloise

Emerson students feel very strongly about study hall and its’ effect on their education.

“I think [study hall] does [relieve stress] because when I’m up late at night I think ‘Oh, I have study hall the next day, I can just finish my assignment there,'” stated sophomore Steven Belloise.

In this instance, study hall allowed Steven to get an additional hour of sleep, which gave him a better start to his day the next day.

But there are some negatives to study hall.

Steven also explained, “I mean, I guess there’s always gonna be people who just waste their time and don’t really do anything. I don’t think that’s a big problem here,” he added.

The positives most definitely outweigh the negatives and study hall is a huge help to stressed out Emerson students.
