Did you hear the news? The cast list for this year’s musical, 9 to 5, has been released! 9 to 5: The Musical will be right here in our very own Emerson Junior-Senior High School auditorium March 2 and 3 (Friday and Saturday) and March 9 and 10 (Friday and Saturday).

According to Mr. Ullman, who is directing the musical alongside his wife, 9 to 5 has four lead female characters. Three of these women plot to scheme against their boss and end up kidnapping him!

These three vengeful women are Violet Newstead, played by Emily Burns and Lauren Romanski; Judy Bernly, played by Julia Botvinov and Isabella Café; and Doralee Rhodes, played by Caroline Seretis and Veronica Abad. The fourth female lead is a character named Roz, the company’s assistant, played by Claudia Pistachio and Olivia San-Emeterio. The male lead is Mr. Franklin Hart, the company’s boss, a sexist egotistical lying hypocritical bigot – he is played by Derek Cartagena. This show has a very important ensemble as well, and there are some great musical numbers, written by Dolly Parton, and hilarious scenes to look forward to!

Mr. Ullman also believes the show is relevant to current social issues. “It is kind of interesting considering what is going on today.” But he added that although this show deals with a serious topic, it is done in a very comedic way.

And what are some of the challenges for 9 to 5? “It is a very high belted show, so this means that the women are singing in an upper register loudly and that is something that I have trouble getting a lot of my students to do,” Ullman added.

Everyone should come see 9 to 5 because it will be a very fun show and it has something for everyone! For students, tickets are $5 in advance. Don’t forget to come support the cast, crew and pit orchestra of 9 to 5: The Musical this March!
